Thieves No More! If Gumby Were a Bicycle...

Jul 14, 2010 10:00 AM

If only all bicycles were as twisty and malleable as Gumby- they'd be easier to lock up, and much easier to transport. Wait a sec. Perhaps there is a such a bike, after all.

Not quite as magical as Gumby, but very cool, nonetheless. British designer, Kevin Scott, has come up with a bendable bicycle prototype that can lock itself to a post without the need for outside lock or chain.

How does it work? Scott uses a ratchet system built into the frame of the bike, in which tightening or loosening makes it more or less rigid, allowing enough flexibilty for wrapping. The bike is currently on display at the New Designers show at the Business Design Centre in Islington, north London.

What do you think?

More or less awe-inspiring than the invisible steering bike?
